During the dot-com bust I got laid off from two separate companies that went under... and had to collect unemployment pay between jobs. Unemployment pay didn't affect me nearly as much as being jobless.

Keep the stubs though-- you still have to pay taxes on that money.

I strongly suggest that you use this unemployment time to strengthen your skill set, get certifications, etc. The more valuable you are to companies, the quicker you'll be hired and the less likely you are to get laid off again.

I was on unemployment for about 3 months when I was terminated from my old job. I suffered no ill effects.

It will affect your record only in the sense of your new prospective employer saying "why did you leave your last job?"

Collecting unemployment isnt that big of a deal since you pay into it. A company wont refuse to hire you because you took some out...lol

I was an electrician. It was a mass lay-off. Only a few remain now. I think I was laid off due to only working part-time because I was going to college.
