Default Vacation: Hawaii (Maui) or South Florida?

Howdy,

I'm going on a week's vacation in September, and have narrowed down the possible destinations to either the Hawaiian island of Maui or Miami and the Florida Keys. Do you guys have any input on which one you'd personally prefer, what there is to do in either place, etc.? Any input is appreciated...

I've been to Maui once a few years ago, but only for two days. I've never been to Florida or anywhere on the East Coast for that matter. However, I've always wanted to check out the Florida Keys. Just not quite sure what to expect there. It'll be just myself and my girlfriend. We're primarily city folks, but we do enjoy nice relaxing scenery and nature as much as we enjoy lively nightlife.

Thanks a bunch.

I live in Florida, and have for the past 15 years. It's nice, and there are things to do, but I just spent two weeks on vacation in Maui.

It was freakin' awesome! I loved it there. I would go back any day. Definitely go to Maui if you have a chance.

My girlfriend and I went, as she used to live there and still has family there. We stayed at her sister's house and had a chance to do many of the "local" stuff and some of the tourist stuff.

I went to many places including Lahaina (tourist section, but cool), Paiea, Kihei and other cities. We went to several beaches and spent the night in Hana to go to black sands beach and the wainapanapa caves. We went to the Seven Sacred Pools. I got a tattoo (brought Hawaii home with me). It was gorgeous! I loved it.

The food was awesome (except that rice comes with everything, and I'm not a big fan of rice). But I ate plenty of fresh fish and other local foods including Haupia ice cream (light coconut flavor - it's so good), shaved ice (Aloha Ice in Paiea) and more.

Go to Maui! The weather was perfect. No rain, perfect conditions, good waves at the beaches, etc.

Florida is hot and muggy and rains every freakin' day during the summer. The Keys are cool and there is plenty to do in South Florida, but you won't have as much fun as Maui.

If you want to know more, just ask. Also, post in the Hawaii section, as some of the local guys may be able to give you more info, however, most are in Oahu and not Maui (Maui is much better).

Maui for hiking and water sports. Florida for sight seeing.

I partial to Maui as well. A week along Kaanapali is always good for the body

Maui over the Keys for sure!

But have you looked into a cruise? The most cost efficient vacation. Food, lodging, entertainment all for a killer deal. PLUS you get to visit multiple islands. Great nightlife also, since you mentioned it

Wow, Maui is winning in a landslide...thanks a lot and please keep the input coming guys!

Prior to this, I was almost set on going to Florida, but now I'm going to reconsider.

Yep, I've considered going on a cruise instead. It does look like a lot of fun. My only thing is that I like to maintain full control over my own schedule, and the extent of my control is more limited on a cruise. I'll probably go on a cruise in the next few years, but not this time around...

Any particular reason you like Maui over the Keys? I've personally been to Maui once, but never been to the Keys or Miami, so I have no clue what they are like.
