Vent thread
i need to vent about some of the stupid things (well just one) we have to do at work. i'm sure everyone has some policy or task that they have to follow at work. so what is it?
this one thing really gets under my skin because it is so f'ing stupid. i'm a salaried employee, but everyone here has to fill out timecards for the hours you put in. in the past we had to write down our hours, by hand, on paper cards at the end of each day or throughout the day if you change projects and charge codes. well for a while now, we've switched to putting our time on the computer....but we still have to write out these stupid time cards by hand!
not everyone has a computer, so those people write out their time on the cards, give it to the secretary to enter into the computer...that's fine. but for those of us who enter our own time in the computer, it's a waste of time and paper.
several other employees and i have tried to convince our boss that this is a waste of time. other departments actually do not fill out the timecards anymore...just us. the boss, our secretary and our other "secretary" (he's really our CAD guy, but he is worthless...seriously...he's been here 35 years, does mostly admin work now and they are too nice to just get rid of him) who all have been here about 35 years and not changed a damn thing from the start, decided we still need to fill out these stupid cards.
so at the end of each week, after i've entered my time in the computer each day, i bring up the program with my times and literally copy it down on paper. i can't even print the thing out because it has to be on these stupid, little blue cards.

Well I agree with you, thats a horrible idea. If youre salary then theres absolutely no point to do anything with a timecard. It also makes no sense that you guys do it while other departments do not. Everyone needs to get on the same page here. Its 2000 freaking 8, theres no need for paper timecards anymore
Im gonna go ahead and add a vent to this thread. I get a company-wide email at 9am saying we will be closing early for memorial day.....as im typing this thread, an email pops up saying "only blah blah has the authority to authorize a shortened day so Friday will actually be a full day"
How about you A-Holes get your S*** together before you send out an email to 300+ people saying we can leave early.

Print your time card on a piece of paper. Then lay the blue card over top of where it needs to be on the paper, and tape down the edges. Then re-print it. Keep doing this until you get corrected.
Or print it out and tape it on the blue card.

i am shocked...i know my co-workers are stupid, but i didn't realize my they were that stupid. i wish my company would let go of some people...mainly the older employees that have been there so long they no longer contribute anything worthwhile to the company. between the CAD guy who sucks at CAD, the secretary that talks on the phone with her friends all day, and the egomaniac electrical engineer in retirement mode (although he's 3 years from retirement)...we have enough of them. that's not likely, so i'm looking for a new job this June (after i get my raise and bonus
)anyone else have any rants about their work? i'm interested...

Are you shocked? The private sector is full of ridiculous policies that just add admin time to your work and people wonder why nothing ever gets done.

I hope you're appropriately logging the time spent filling out timecards so your clients are being charged for your company's procedures

Just don't forget to attach the appropriate cover sheet on your TPS reports. I'll go ahead and get you another copy of that memo.

Government agencies suffer from nonsensical procedures more than any private company I've seen. It's an issue everywhere, really.
