Default Video Capture hardware/software question

I'm looking for an economical solution to my video capture/editing needs.

I'm looking for a hardware/software package that does:

- Video capture from various external sources (VHS, VCD, Cable, etc.) via S-Video cable or normal cables.
- Video editing (simple stuff, cut out parts, reassemble, etc.)
- Video compression (formats in *.AVI, *.MPG, *.WMV, etc.)

Any suggestions?

Well, I'm by no means a professional, but the ATI All-in-wonder cards do fairly well with video capture. I also had a Matrox G200 Marvel that did decent video capture, but replaced it with an ATI Radeon 64Meg VIVO. The new ATI Radeon 8500DV card has built-in firewire support for DV captures which might be something you want to look into. NVidia also has a DV solution with their cards, but depends on the board manufacturer to implement (ASUS adds video in stuff to their Deluxe cards I believe).

As for editing, Adobe Premiere is one of the more robust packages out there. Most Video Capture-capable video cards will usually bundle some kind of video editing software.

As for video compression, a lot of the videos I captured ended up in AVI format using MJPEG compression (for Matrox Marvel). There are a lot of programs which can re-compress video into different formats.... AVI -> MPG etc.

For more serious hardware, try the Matrox RT2500 or the DPS Perception Systems.

Richard, that video I did a while back, I used a Hauppauge WinTV tv tuner card with a VCR. You can input a cable tv line also (my card will also take in S-Video). I captured a raw file using Hauppauge's software and compressed using Premier. You can get the WinTV card for under $100. I also got a Monster cable to improve the image quality.

Avoid USB video adapters like the plague, unless it's based on the newer USB 2.0 standard and your system also can support USB 2.0. The original USB standard (1.2, I think) can't push data fast enough and you will end up with crap results. I know - I've tried one at work.

Firewire would be fine - it was built for high-speed data transfer.

The Sony DVMC-DA2 (if you can find one) around $300.

Canopus ADVC-100, at $300 does the same thing.

What kind of DV camera are you using?
