Default Virtual name host with Apache on a MAC

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my domain to point to my computer so that instead of typing in http://###.##.## they can just input the domain name and it will take them to the same thing.

I'm on the newest version of OSX on a Mac.

Also, will I be able to access/view my own website from the same computer that I'm hosting it from?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a specific domain name in mind?

You have to contact whoever is hosting your domain name, usually the company you registered the name with, and have them change the pointer to your IP address.

It usually takes them a couple days to make the change. Once the change is made, it takes up to 24 hours for it to propogate to all the DNS servers.

You'll definitely be able to access the website from the same computer that hosts the website.

I take it you have a static IP address on that computer? If that's the case, do what Albert said. If you have a dynamic IP (i.e., the IP address changes from time to time), you'll have to look into some dynamic DNS solution (I use www.no-ip.com, www.dyndns.org is another option).

Thanks for the advice guys. When I bought my domain, it did ask me to input some dns stuff. I do have a static IP.

Do I have anything to worry about when it comes to people hacking my computer? I don't want them to see anything other than the designated files in the sites folder.

It is always good to have some sort of firewall in place. But at the same time, if someone really wanted to hack your box, there wouldn't be much standing in the way....

Hmm.. maybe I should just get a company to host it for me instead of having to deal with the headaches...

Woot. (Notice my username)

I'd have to recommend http://www.no-ip.com also

I really like no-ip's auto update daemon that runs on my Linux box (it comes as a Windows services as well).
