Hurled by catapult...
...student misses safety net
THIS was no bizarre escape scene from a James Bond movie. It was a real life stunt gone tragically wrong.
On Sunday, an Oxford student died after being flung 30m into the air by a huge catapult.
The 19-year-old was taking part in the stunt in Woolavington near Bridgwater, Somerset, UK.
Witnesses said the Bulgarian-born teen was hurled into the air by a catapult but missed the safety net and hit the ground.
He sustained serious spinal and leg injuries at the scene. He was airlifted to the nearby Frenchay Hospital in Bristol where he died at 7.30pm on the same day.
The student, who has not been identified, was a member of the Oxford Stunt Factory - an unofficial university dangerous-sports club that has arranged stunts for films including the James Bond thriller, Goldeneye.
The 15m-tall catapult is designed to fling a person on to a safety net which is secured above the ground.
Mr David Aitkenhead, a partner in the business that organises the catapult events, said: 'The human catapult is becoming increasingly popular among daredevils and extreme adventurers.
'Unfortunately, on this occasion something went wrong and has resulted in tragedy.'
He added: 'We had already successfully thrown one of our own people, and then another four of his fellow students. And when we flung him, something - I don't know what - went wrong.'
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the Wadham college student. The police in Bridgwater have launched a full investigation into the incident in association with the Health and Safety Executive.
