not much real difference out there as long as what you had was working for you, but XP has its own firewall is all.

I have XP.

I see XP has firewall. So you are saying I don't need another firewall? XP's will suffice?

XP's firewall sucks, trust me.
Zone Alarm is good. And free!
I've always liked Norton for virus protection
I'd also download Spybot Search and Destroy (free) and AdAware (free) to scan for spyware programs.

I use all of the above, and have been problem free for 4 years. Run Zone Alarm always, and the spyware programs once a week or so.

well, you may not like it, but please describe how it "sucks." All it has to do is stop incoming traffic, and restrict outgoing, which it does just fine.

uppitychick-
If Norton was working for you, you might as well just buy it again. There isn't a whole lot of difference out there in anti-virus software as far as effectiveness. XP's firewall is decent for home use. Zone-Alarm is not bad, either, but running multiple firewalls isn't necessary, or even very handy. If you don't want to worry about it, just stick wih the default firewall in XP.

If what you had was working well, then I'd just stick with it...

But if you're going to switch, then just about any antivirus program is okay. I've personally always used McAfee, but Norton and AVG are popular choices, too, and I'm not convinced that there's a big difference between them for your average user.

Zone Alarm is probably a better firewall than the built-in XP one, but honestly, it shouldn't make a big difference for the typical computer user. Since Zone Alarm costs nothing, I'd say to go for that.

I am actually serious here (sorry for thread hijack ) what do you folks like better about Zone Alarm, and what do you dislike about the XP firewall? Experiences, opinions, please.

I believe Zone Alarm blocks more incomming traffic that the XP firewall ever will, if you have Zone Alarm you will see that. Zone Alarm will have messages asking you if you want certain traffic to come in or not, when the XP firewall will never do that. And it has been recommended several times over by computer guys even if you have XP, my bro in law is one of the head computer tech guys at a big company, and does all types of stuff computer wise, so I will trust him. And plus the extra protection never hurts.
