How about this petition your representative to open up oil production in Alaska and force car companies to create vehicles that have higher mileage ratings. If you want permision to sell cars in the united states over 10,000 units then 10% of what you sell must be either alternative fuel cars and/or get over 50mpg with fines if you do not comply. Selling goods in america through corporations isn't a right its subject to law.
The petition idea I agree with as it is a governmental law that is keeping us from drilling there.

As for "forcing" car companies to make more fuel efficient vehicles? That is BS. The free market will take care of that for us. When gas hits $4/gallon those SUV sales are gonna tank. They are already tanking at $3/gallon. I know I won't be buying another SUV gas hog when my wife's Explorer is due for replacement. Ford and GM are about to go bankrupt. If they could figure out a 30 mpg mid-size SUV that didn't fall apart they would sell all they could make!

Vote with your wallet.

This whole thread is funny. In San Diego, there are only 2 gas companies that supply refined gas to all of san diego. All retailers sell gas that comes from BP (arco) and Exxon. The gas is pumped down from LA and is stored at the tanks in Mission valley. So you basically have 2 options for gas. Exxon on AM/PM.

The additives are added at the storage facility for the different companies. So for Cheveron they add the techron but only at the time they are filling up the tanker trucks.

This is information I have been told from different "executives" in San Diego. If I am wrong please let me know.

So basically I can fill up with BP (arco) gas that contains 15% ethanol that I believe makes my car run worse. So I am stuck buying Exxon refined.

And an FYI: There are only 4 companies that refine oil in the US. Companies in () are companies they bought out.
Exxon (mobil)
BP (arco)
Cheveron (texaco)
Citgo (diamond)

That may be true for NEW SUV sales. but the old ones will then hit the used car market with minimal value while effecient used cars will increase in value. The SUV's will still be around for a long time to come,. being driven by people who can least afford their lousy mileage an d the maintenance to maxiize what little efficincy they have.

you guys should check out what I call the Hummer Index.
go to eBay Motors and check out how many Hummers are for sale, prices, etc.

last time oil was above $70/barrel I think I remember seeing 60+ H1s and H2s being sold.

edit: I see 166 listed on eBay today.
