Default watches: crowns..

I'm starting to get into buying watches lately, but I haven't the slightest clue how or what those compass crowns are for? I mean, it rotates around really nicely, but as far as I can tell, it's sort of useless as a compass.

Can anyone fill me on what the deal is here?

dog, if you want to roll like a stud. You have two choices:
the first is a rolex. buy it used cause new ones have to be cracked open at some point and that'll cost ya.
the second if you can't afford that is a movado. They're great for the money. good style, kinetic battery, and affordable for a watch that most people don't have. I actually have both. I got a movado for my 21st birthday from my mom. Then a few months ago I bought a stainless steel submariner rolex. They are all the same. Once you own one you realize how dumb it is. It tells time just the same as any other watch. It just makes a statement like, "look I can spend a few thousand on a watch and you can't." SOO DUMB. so get swatch(preferably with the rubber or plastic band), save a few bucks.

oh. yeah i have a cheap Honda watch for "daily use" for now. it has the NWSE compass dial thing around it. but my roommate explained to me what it was. i was thinking about getting a fake rolex from china or something. apparently the more expensive ones can pass for real ones. i also got a movado, but it's not a high end one. it's a decent start i suppose. thanks for the advice though.

bezel is for seeing how much time has gone by quickly. You turn the bezel until the zero is at the position of the minute hand and then you can quickly see when 30min has gone by or any other time. It is used primarily by divers.

i've got a fake tag from malaysia (i paid about $40 for it). it's a pretty good fake, the skeleton window on the back is solid--with tag logos on the internals. the face is good but not perfect. it's held up on close exam by a bunch of people.

but after a few months it started keeping slower time and the adjuster knob keeps coming off.

i also bought a patek phillipe for $8 in singapore. it does not look like a real patek, but it's still a pretty watch (and keeps time fine). i consider these play watches...

when i was in asia the nicer rolex fakes run about $150, they look good and will trick most people.

but i would just save a little extra money and buy a real watch in the 500-1000 range, like an Omega or the middle range Tags (some of the used rolexes are pretty reasonable). The fake ones just won't hold up to a beating, and the real watches will last a long time, so it's not that expensive over the long term.

Dude, everyone's got a Movado...they're like a dime a dozen.. I hear ya on the Rollie though...nice watch. My personal favorite is a Breitling or that watch that has a band looking like an F1 tire (I think it is an Omega).

Another reason for the compus is for a relative posistion based on what you already know...

the reality of it is, its pretty useless..

I have a watch that is supposed to tell me how much fuel I'll use going at a certain speed..15 years later fuked if I know how to use it.

I too have been on a watch kick lately...really expensive hobby, as most of mine are...

And since someone mentioned Omega..My fav for now anyway...Automatic day-date chrono
