I'd go for a Benelli M1 entry gun, should fit behind the seats if you set up a custom rack for it.

You could always carry a Mag-Lite that holds 6 D-Cell batteries. I have one and although I've never been hit by it, I'm assuming that it would hurt like a bitch. Plus a flashlight is always a handy thing to have in your car.

i think a six cell maglite and a fire extinguisher in the car would be the less obvious and practical "self-defense" accessories you could keep in your car.

hmm..id rather go with the .40...that way after they see it and run behind a car door you can still get to em.

keep one of these things handy, i use one when i fish sometimes. its solid fiberglass, very light, and would do some major damage if u wanted to. or just a "tap" on the knuckle of the other guy and theres no way hes fighting back.
