Default Webvan goes out of business

The news just mentioned that they are dead and are filing for bankruptcy.

It lost an estimated $500 million.

Oh well.

That's too bad. I know a lot of people that rely on Webvan to get their groceries. Looks like they're going to have to go to the grocery store now.

Doesn't PeaPod.com still exist for those that can't/won't go to the grocery store?

It's the cost of creating the distribution system that killed them. Those fully automated warehouses sure do look nice but they also cost a pretty penny.

Sainsbury's in the UK is succesfully (read: making money) delivering groceries to homes. Instead of building new warehouses, they send the order to the closest store to be fulfilled. They've even though far enough ahead to figure out at what point they would need to build central distribution warehouses.
