Default Western Ports Shutdown

I'm surprised that I haven't heard anyone complaining about delayed deliveries of their new S2Ks yet... I guess not enough time has passed!

Anyway, when your dealer contacts you and tells you that your car is sitting off-shore, thank the unions!

Actually there is another thread on this near the bottom of the first page:

And by the way, you can thank the Pacific Maritime Association (the ports), not the Union because it's a lockout, not a strike.

Funny how the unions squeal when they get locked out but never hesitate to strike when given the chance.

The longshormen here make $109,000 per year, sometimes only have to work 4 hours and they crash many cars while driving them off the boats.

Now they are squealing about loosing jobs to data people writing programs to keep track of the containers with bar codes instead of paying someone to write with chalk on the container.

Now they want the software people to have to join the union

Go figure,

Woodwork

I'm not entirely sure of the working conditions that all Longshoremen must endure, but given that they make from $80k to $150k+ for relatively unskilled labor, I'd say they've got it pretty good.

This whole stink revolves around a couple hundred jobs! One of the ironic things I read was that they are fighting the PMA because the PMA wants to replace clerical workers (who are making $80k+) with machines, as Woodwork said, for many of the jobs. The ILWU is fighting to prevent this, and while they haven't called a strike, they are effectively making it easier for management to justify that very process.

And I thought our contract negotiations were a mess...

Glad all my goodies go by air.

I'd hate to be shipping by sea and feel sorry for those exporters (and recipients) that have to.

Looks like the ILW doesn't want things too efficient since less jobs would be required to do the same amount of work, those working the docks would have to work 'harder' since workers would be more accountable etc. Sad.

Prolene, that is generally how all unions are. Every union I've been involved with has always promoted the mentality of doing your job (and ONLY your job, as written out word-for-word in the description) at the absolute slowest possible rate w/o hurting the process as a whole. After all, there is no reward for doing good work in a timely manner. Efficiency and accountability are 2 words that make union types shudder.

It's a shame that management has ever been in a position to force Unions into the fray.
