let's see...my car history:

first car in high school
1969 124 fiat spider convertible(used)...
the car that motivated me to get my s2000. that 1969 spider had a twin cam 1400cc motor rebuilt and machined out to approx 1800. Plus a dual jet 44mm weber carb. Had 188k miles when I lost it(parents took it away, thought it was too fast and unsafe...). It is still in southern cal according to a few police friends - I'd love to buy it back.

second car
1981 vw rabbit(used) - fully modified above a beyond 16v gti standards. all billstein/neuspeed suspension, engine, exhaust...it was the $10k rabbit! Engine died with 180k and was made into a car stereo competition car last I heard.

third car
1991 acura integra(new) neuspeed racing springs, eurosport accessories custom exhaust, neuspeed short shift kit, tsw 15" with avs inter. Sold to my family with 70k original miles to get the s2000

suv - extra car
1986 toyota 4runner 4x4 sr5(used) - stock, less 31" and rancho suspension...still running daily to carry bikes, dogs, whatever the s2000 doesn't fit. Plus, keeps the mileage a little lower on the s2000

now the s2000 and the 4runner share the garage, along with 4 bikes(the pedaling kind...road, mtn, etc)

the next car? probably a bigger house with a 3 car garage first.

The first hand me down (back in 1992)

1988 Toyota Supra Turbo -- Dad's rationale: Its a heavy and sturdy car, perfect for someone just starting to drive. Also, its paid for and being 4 years old, its taken the brunt of depreciation. This car had problems from day one, so naturally when I got it, it had more problems.

1992 Sentra SE-R -- Had to trade the Supra in due to its problems and this was the only decent car I could find in a limited price range (limited to Supra + 4k). Drove it for 7 years and did all kind of stuff to it (stereo, wheels, tires, suspension, turbo)

1999 Corvette -- I'd always wanted a Corvette, and when I could finally afford one, I bought one. Fantastic car, with plenty of power, torque, comfort, reliability (yes, I know its a Chevy!). However, by this point I was no longer living in Texas, no longer going to the street races, and when I decided that I wanted to go back to school, it was time to scale down from the high priced 2 seater. Plus, gas was approaching 2 bucks a gallon and as good as the Vette's highway gas mileage was at 30+ it still was around 17 in the city (most of my driving was in the city).

So, I figured it was a good time to try a convertible. The Miata made me feel cramped, so the S2000 fit the bill.

I had it 8 months, in which time I had the clutch replaced (TSB), the water pump replaced, and the rear window replaced (1 time good will gesture). It also provided some of the most fun I've had in a car. The Corvette was fun on track days and I had a lot of fun in the SE-R during the summer after my senior year

Top down driving spoiled me into believing that a sunroof is a joke. Gas mileage in the S2000 was a little better than the Vette. Then, reality set in and I realized that the S2000 was indeed a special car, like the Vette had been. Its not something you just leave out to the wolves. When someone tried to steal my side marker light and broke it, I knew that going to school and having a flashy car weren't going to mix. I was paranoid about parking it -- you know, this spot isn't wide enough, safe enough, etc...

I wasn't going to give up my acceleration fun, so I sold the S2000 and bought a WRX wagon. I get about 85-90% of the acceleration of the S2000, 50% of the insurance, better gas mileage, and if I ever need to carry anything, I can ( I've already brought home stuff that wouldnt fit in a WRX sedan!). As for acceleration, its decent enough that I am happy... its not the screamer the S was, but it wasn't meant to be. I've raced 1 LT1 SS Z28 with a 6 speed and it was dead even, which surprised me... Wonder how he liked a wagon staying that close to him

you'll enjoy the WRX... Its a fun daily driver, and a car that I enjoy driving a lot. In some ways, its more enjoyable because the paranoia isn't there. It might not be as rewarding to drive, but its nice to pull up to any 'ol parking spot and shut her down, hop out, lock it, and walk away.

For performance, the "regular" WRX can be modded up to actually make more power than the STi. You do void the warranty, but you would spend less money and have it now

Harry!

You had a Mercedes 300D? What year?

My family's finally going to retire our Mercedes 300D after 23 years of faithful but increasingly less reliable service.

It's time to replace the 300D with...

A brand new 2001.5 Mercedes Benz C32 AMG in silver w/black interior! Talk about a complete 180 in terms of performance- tested as being faster than a M3 0-60mph, and can come de-speed-limited from the factory as a hush-hush option. I've heard 189mph is not out of the question.

I'll finally have the use of a car in Hong Kong that's somewhat reliable- something I haven't had here since I sent my GT-R to the States...
