Ok, I don't understand how you can die from diarrhea.

I'd be curious to see a similar post from 1957.

Yup, you have to be very careful about dehydrating if you have diarrhea.

Is it really that hard to go to your local pond or pump and take a drink every other hour? Seems like it would really be a case of carelessness rather than a deadly disease.

But did people understand the problem 100 years ago?? The problem these days in the thrid world countries is that in many circumstances they don't have access to water that is of a drinkable quality. Also you lose salts and other minerals when you dehydrate, which need to be replaced.

If you check out the isotonic sports drinks that are so popular now, these contain the salts etc. that your body needs when you get dehydrated, it is not just a case of putting the water back into your system....

a lot of times diarrhea is caused by what is found in their drinking water. Dehydration and loss of minerals is what kills them. That's why u should drink gatorade if you get diarrhea, to replentish water and salts.

In 100 years in the future, they might be saying, "Damn how can someone die from Cancer or AIDS?"
