But did people understand the problem 100 years ago?? The problem these days in the thrid world countries is that in many circumstances they don't have access to water that is of a drinkable quality. Also you lose salts and other minerals when you dehydrate, which need to be replaced.
If you check out the isotonic sports drinks that are so popular now, these contain the salts etc. that your body needs when you get dehydrated, it is not just a case of putting the water back into your system....
