GM Backs Off On Plan to Sell Cadillacs in Europe
December 19, 2001

General Motors is abandoning plans to establish a joint European distribution and dealer network for its Cadillac and Saab brands, the Financial Times reported.

The move reverses plans announced only two months ago. GM will, however, still try to sell Cadillacs in Europe but it is also delaying the launch of new Cadillac models in Europe by several months, pending the creation of dedicated dealers. The European introduction of Cadillac's new CTS model will not occur as planned next summer, but may be pushed forward to early 2003.
"Cadillac has failed to establish a meaningful presence in Europe," the Financial Times said. The most recent industry figures published put its market share at about 0.1 per cent. In the UK, Cadillac sold six cars last month and 88 so far this year, compared with 76,488 for BMW - its target customer group.

Perhaps GM should take a hint from Europe, whose taste in cars tends to be a bit better (styling wise)...
