Do you mean "Avatar"? As in a cyberspace representation of yourself? Not sure where it comes from (sounds like a mystical animal spirit) but I know it as a virtual you.

Anybody watch the sci-fi series on TV: "Andromeda" with Kevin Sorbo (Hercules fame). The name of the ship is "Andromeda Ascendant" and the ship's avatar is "Rommi" - played by this gorgeous Asian girl. She is an android that is a human representation of the ship so the crew can relate to the ship on a more personal level.

The earliest use of term 'avatar' to describe the cyberspace persona of an actual person is in the virtual reality system called Habitat (by F. Randall Farmer and Chip Morningstar) on the Commodore 64.

The term was later made popular by Neal Stephenson in his book 'Snow Crash'. In Snow Crash cyberspace is a 3D fully immersive environment known as the 'MetaVerse'. Your 'Avatar' can be any object you like. It's only restriction is it cannot be taller than you are in reality. Your computer scans you face in real time and projects this onto the face of the Avatar. In the Metaverse it is not uncommon to see a six foot penis walking around with a human face.

A highly recommended read if you enjoy Cyberpunk.

Actually, one of the license plates ive considered is 'DLVR8R' need to check if it's availble. But yeah, one of my favorite SciFi books. My only complaint is the same complaint I have for Cryptonomicon and that's that Neal Stephenson can't write an ending.
