Default What to look for in a plumber?

Okay folks, I need some help in chosing a plumber in my area. If you have answers to these questions, please chime in.

when I call a plumber, what should I ask?
How do I know I'm getting an honest and professional plumber?
What are the signs I should look for that a plumber is reputable?
What are red flags I should look out for?

Thanks,
Warren

I went by the "Best of South Jersey" ratings done by a local newspaper, and picked Hutchinson, a large local firm. All the work they've done for me have been perfect, and they always leave the basement cleaner than they found it.

I know there are plenty of good independent plumbers out there, but without a trusted referral, I'd go with a large company.

Dammit, saw this on the main page, and knew that I'd be too late for the ass crack joke.

Make sure that they are licensed and insured. Check with the local Home Builders' Association, call a builder and see who they use.

Licensed, Bonded, and Insured. If you have the time get an estimate in writing with a not to exceed price. Some aren't willing to do that, but I have found that saves you from the "Oh, btw, I found this and this and this which adds to your bill."
