What are some good charities to donate to?

Over in Vietnam originally where my mom is from just had a huge hurricane. She goes back every year to buy LBS of rice for them and give out money.

Donate to local charities imo. For me donating has and always will be a community thing. Local animal shelter + progress ranch (home for abused children) + public radio. The only non-local stuff I donate to is environmental, mostly Yosemite fund. Not a huge fan of donating to general purpose welfare stuff, I think the government already does more than enough there. Medical there is already tons of funding for so you aren't going to make much of a difference.

On a side not Vietnamese people amuse me greatly. They're generally cheap as hell all year long and then they fly to Vietnam and hand money out like it's nothing. Sorta a vicious cycle... all my high school buddies who went to Vietnam for either the first time or since they'd been old enough to know about money always come back kinda pissed off because everyone there just expects it and is never grateful for the money. Like you hand 'em $200 and they don't even thank you. "Well you know it's really not that much since everyone is rich in America" hehe.

I found one place that appealed to me so far...it's an orphanage in Tanzania that my g/f helped out at a few months ago. .
Since the above suggestions are very good I'm not going to add anything. I will ask a question. Do we know the g/f?

For local ideas, many communities (at least in Ontario) have websites that have a searchable, categorized list of community resources, many of which are charities.
This is Toronto's. It's a great starting point to learn about organizations you may not have known about.
