What video card to buy
whoa guys calm down. RickJames said he wants to play HL 2 so no doubt his 9700 will run like a screaming banshee on that thing (ATi worked side-by-side with Valve to create the drivers) now Nvidia must catch up to ATis fps. Dont fret RJ, youre in good hands.
HL2 is twice as fast on 6800ultra than 9700.
Now if he had an X800 that statement would be true by only 9fps.
Why did ATi work with the developers to create the drivers?
Because they don't adheare to the standards and what would happen if Half-life didn't work well with the X800?
Yet another game that wouldn't run with ATi cards taking a chunk out of them.
I'm glad to see they are at least trying to improve on their miserable history of poor support.
I'm starting to think the only reason why ATi is so subborn is because they're a canadian company.

First off, let me douse the fires because I'm not going to buy a geforce card that is over $250. This is because I dont want to buy a card that is too fast for my computer. There is no point in me paying that much for a card that will not give me any performance benefits over the card I bought.
Second, I do agree that ATi has sucked quite awhile ago, but the radeon series has made up for them making really crappy 3D cards. But I can't say anything about their driver support etc.
Now, exceltoexcel, the benchmarks that you posted are just for one game. Just because you posted those benchmarks, doesnt mean that the card sucks for all other games. In fact, I've done my homework and thus far all of the games that I play support the card I bought. So I am not worried about it.
If anyone wants a good review site for any type of computer hardware--http://www.anandtech.com/
I went to highschool with this guy that owns this site and he knows his stuff. Not to mention that with his video cards, he will write reviews on new cards using a plethora of benchmarks. But for the most part, his tests have shown that ati cards consistently perform the best. Not to mention that nvidia is not doing as well as they used to.

Actually the link I gave you will show you results for over 10 games but if you continue to explore that site you'll find many many more!
this guy isn't just some dude from your high scholl (checked that site out it is pretty damn good!)he collects reviews from people arouns the nation not just his own views. If you looked it over you'd fine much of what you site says.
I read it as ATi lacks proper support !
This Link!
If you want I'm sure I can find a long list of games that ATi cards can not play. This is your choice I could care less about this issue cause it's clear based on my previous and all the main reviews that I've read that ATi always seems to fall short in the end because they lack the amount of staff to stay on the cutting edge of technology but they can sure streach old technology farther than the nvidia which just gives up on the old platform and makes a new one.

i think you fit the classic definition of what is joked around in tech circles as a "fan-boy"
Your support for Nvidia scares me. I think you remember Nvidia blantantly cheating on 3dmark03 right?
I don't know if you remember the GeforceFX series? In DX9, they blow. the 9700-9800s trounce them in every DX9 games that use DX9 code.
Now, ATI and Nvidia perform well, depending on the game, although the x800 seems to win more often. Doom3 was made for Nvidia, HL2 for ATI.
Just to show less bias, I used to own a 9700 and loved it. I now own a 6800Ultra. ATI has improved the X800 quite a bit since the introduction.
Also, tom's is lauded for their ineptitude in the "harder core" tech press. Anand knows his stuff. I second www.anandtech.com.
excel, what is this about lack of directx10 support? DX10 won't be out until Longhorn and neither ati nor nvidia support it and won't for some time. for the record, ati's r300 and r420-430 meet the dx9 spec perfectly. they did make their own extensions, called shader 2.0b instead of shaders3 in the 6800 (which is the DX9.0c specification). shaders 3 has spotty support now, that's why ati postponed it. their 2.0b implementation is just about as good and has plenty of support in the industry.

I'm not a fan of nvidea I just hate ATi for fvcking me over big time for over a year and they keep doing it.
If you checked out those reviews the x800 does kick ass and often, even get a thumbs up over the ultra right now, but not in the future.
Ati cards have always preformed well but there is always a bunch of games not supported while Nvidia always works! You don't have to wait for a new driver or for ATi to get there $hit together.
And oh yea ATI cheated by over clocking the tested x800pro in these test.
Check it out Nvidia is supporting direct x10 ALREADY! That's why Microsoft gives out beta's for testing!
MSDN subscription = the right way to develop drivers early.
I didn't see any better revies on ATI at that site either! They said in the first ATI article just how bad ATi is at support.
It does complain about nvidia not perfecting its video processor but that wasn't a publicly talked about component it was just "leaked" to the reviewers whom never had an opotunity to actually test it because it wasn't activated on their test boards.
Just two weeks ago, ATI introduced their brand new line of X850 and X800 GPUs, a month before the end of the year. In a highly unusual move for a graphics company to introduce so many new products just before the year's end, many have speculated as to the true reasoning behind ATI's decision. Had this been a launch in October or November, it would have been a non-issue, as that's still (barely) enough time to capitalize on the holiday selling period, but a month before the end of the year?
If you ask ATI, the launch was their chance to resolve some availability problems that they had with their higher end cards. ATI promised that within a week of its launch, the Radeon X850 line would be available for purchase online and by January, the new X800 GPUs would also be available. If you ask NVIDIA, they'll say that ATI's year end launch was nothing more than an attempt to delay the purchase of NVIDIA cards and that the availability of the X850 before 2005 was a myth.
If you ask us, we don't know who or what to believe anymore. This past year has been filled of missed releases, missed launches and misinformation. From NVIDIA's Video Processor to ATI's disappearing X700 XT, we're tired of all of it. ATI's promise about X850 GPUs being sold a week after they were launched turned out to be empty as we still can't find any X850 based GPUs available for sale. Even after firing off multiple emails to ATI asking for resolution on the availability matter, we were met with nothing but silence. ATI had no problem answering other questions, but all of our queries about X850 availability have been left untouched. Maybe radio silence will make the problem go away...
We don't think so. The credibility of both GPU vendors has been hurt tremendously this year. Neither side can say that they aren't guilty of the very same things that they accuse the other of doing. It's really a shame because in the end, it hurts their consumers, our readers and makes it much more difficult for anyone, including us, to put faith and trust in what we are told by ATI and NVIDIA

If I am correct, from my friend's site, he has a staff that works for him to review hardware--as far as I know, he doesnt post other people's reviews that are outside of his company. And yes it is a nice website--nice enough such that he drives a 911.
and not to be a fanboy either ( I have a GF3) what about Nvidia's aim to con the "stupid" market of people by releasing MX versions of cards?! WTF, a GF 4 MX is slower in processing and has less features than my GF3, not GF 3 TI, just the FIRST GF3. Dont get me wrong, but that move was a slap in the face to the public.
