Aren't these guys more like navigators, in that they are responsible for not only calculating where the next turn is, but also for keeping the car on schedule (timed stages,etc.)

I think your talking about at a TSD(Time, Speed,Distance) rally where the check points are timed in that you have to be there in a specific time. In WRC they are going as fast as they can from check point to check point.
