What's the difference between "right" and "left"?

I'm not certain, but I think that the labels "left" and "right" came from the tendency of the Labor party to sit on the left side of the House of Commons in England, and the Tories to sit on the right side. I do not know whether left and right are determined from the speaker's point-of-view or the gallery's point-of-view.

Bill,

Labour sit on the Left hand side of the House of Commons as the Speaker looks at them, and the Conservatives on the Right hand side ..... and yes, I am pretty sure this is where the terms left wing and right wing originated ......

The following is another Political Beliefs poll. It produces a similar result, in the form of an X-Y coordinate value. The poll is longer, and the questions are more thought provoking. I think considering the size of this poll, I would put more faith in the result.

For what it's worth, the characteristic of being right-handed or being left-handed--handedness, as it were--is known as chirality.

Both the words "sinister" and "gauche" mean left-handed. This is not to suggest that liberals are either sinister or gauche--some are and, quite possibly, some aren't--it's simply offered for the fact of the matter.

Sinister coming from the Latin "Sinistra" meaning left .....

It is also intersting that dextrous (meaing skilful) comes from the Latin "Dextera" meaning right.

The Romans obviously didn't like left handed people
