Default \What's the price of steel?

Anyone know the price per pound of steel these days? I'm cleaning out a relative's garage after his death and there is a lot of steel that I need to get rid of so I plan to take it to recycling but I need to know what the price/lb is to see if it's worth it.

About $180 a ton.

You will not make a bunch of money, but you might find a local recycler who will pick it up for free and do the work for you. Otherwise hauling a trailer of heavy steel just gives you a sore back, a few dollars and the satisfaction of knowing you put something to reuse rather that rusting in a landfill.

New, .5" diameter 1018 roundbar was $.07 / inch as of June 17th. Brass and bronze is worth a lot right now, but steel won't fetch much.

A36 steel is about $0.35/lb in bulk these days. By bulk, I mean, if you're buying tons (literally) of it. An entire mill run is cheaper and "by the piece" is more expensive.

By the way, scrap steel is worth far less than what anyone here is quoting. We're quoting buy prices, not scrap sell prices. HUGE difference.

Here's a good public source, though they specialize in non-ferrous metals:

$400 / tonne (2200lbs, not 2000)

Right, my quote was more for the purpose of opening his eyes. It's probably not worth it.

I second that, I just took in about 1500lbs of scrap and got a check for a whooping $9.60...
