OK, let me be more specific. I've always been into Astronomy. Ever since I was knee high to a goat, I've had a small telescope. Ever since I was rump high to as goat, I said I was going to get a big scope. For 25 years my wife said "No, no, you don't need a big scope. You've got a little one, there's nowhere to put it, and you wouldn't use it enough to justify the expense." She must have said that 472 times.
After her father died, her mother started going downhill and we had to start supporting her physically and financially. Four years ago last November (or maybe it was five -- sniffing too much toxic waste), my wife decided she was going to Hawaii for a week with her mother. I had to stay behind and work. One day I was struggling at the computer with a particularly difficult technical report that was giving me a headache and she calls to tell me she was about to step aboard a helicopter for a tour of the volcanos on the Big Island. Steam was coming out of my ears.
When she got home from the airport she must have been feeling guilty and announced "Raptor, I think you should get that big scope you've always wanted." I ordered it the next day -- a Meade 8" LX200 computerized beauty, the whole nine yards.
Why am I telling you this story? I get the feeling that my wife's going to Catalina for three days with her mother and niece is a mini version of the Hawaii trip and she will return bearing a certain amount of guilt that I can serendipitously take advantage of again.
