what's your avg energy bill?
me:
2400 sq ft brand new house
programmable thermostat, set to 62 deg - daytime, and 71 deg -> night during the winter.
avg bill $100-$120. but last month when folks were in town and avg temp was 75 24/7
the bill was $230.
summertime it's around $40-60

I have a smaller house, and heat with oil. The programmable thermostat is set to 17C in the evenings and I think 15C during the weekdays. It costs about $300 to fill the tank and in the winter they fill it about every 4-6 weeks.
I have no carpet - it's all hardwood and tile, which makes it feel cooler (on the feet anyway!). I've decided to close off the spare room in an effort to help, but I don't think it's making a huge difference. Once the weather is better, I'll be replacing all the windows...Frikkin' home ownership....

why do you turn the heat up at night? One would think it take a lot more energy to constantly be letting the house cool off, then reheating all the air and furniture and structure each day. Consider if you put an ice cube in your hand, let it melt, then got another, versus letting the ice melt, then just keping the remaining water at body temp. Seems your hand would get mighty cold with each fresh ice cube, suggesting that the constant temperature fluctuation is taking more energy than maintaining a constant temp. But I am not a HVAC engineer
About 3000 sq ft if you include finished basement. House is three years old so relatively modern and efficieint. 80% efficient furnace.
Night and daytime set at 60, When I am home it goes to 67 (yes, the girlfriend complains it is too cold but I like it cold, I will be uncomfortable at 69 degrees)
Last month average temp was 35 and bill was $150 for gas and electricity. My bill is due any day now for the past month and temp was much colder so I am afraid to look. Rates are way up this year. In an average year that $150 bill I received would have been about $100.
My favorite line from Ron White "My ex wife and I had our little differences. One was that I like to set the thermostat bettwen 70 and 72, my ex liked it set somewhere between 74 and 120."
