I recently found out that you have to pay a fee so that you can receive your package if you're in Italy.

My friend had to pay 60 Euro for a package that I sent her...that's MORE than what I paid to send to her!

Does anyone know how to get around that?

 

Could the fee be the customs duties?

Try a declared value of 0?

 

Ahhh, duh. I didn't think of that one...(me = idiot).

I thought there was some special tax/fee they had to pay besides duties, etc.

I suppose the only drawback is that the package may not be insured for any declared value since you put 0 dollars (since UPS/FEDEX insures up to $100).

What if you put the description of the package as a PERSONAL ITEM?

In most foriegn counties you have to pay a tax when recieving mail if they have placed a value on the items being sent. Best thing to do is when the person is mailing it fromt the US they should only put the value of the contents at $1 and say they are photos or somthing lame like that. I believe they will be insured up to $500 anyway with Fedex, although I'm not %100 sure.

You can put the true value of the package, as long as you declare it as a gift. The EU will not collect duties on a gift. I believe there is also a value limit, but I can't recall what it is.

You may also want to contact your carrier about this. For example, when we ship DHL, we pay the duties on the package as part of the shipping costs. It clears customs via DHL's assigned duties officers and gets delivered without any additional charges. Most of the major carriers do the same.

I am guess that you shipped it USPS. If that is the case, duties are paid upon receipt.
