Why doesn't anyone use the search function?

OK, maybe not everyone. But wouldn't it make sense that if you're new to the board that you're probably not the first person to ever have that question? Do people not even know that the search function is there?

I use the search function, but then again, I've been around boards like this for sometime, and this one in particular for about a year (H-A.net before this emerged).

But you really shouldn't be hard on people that are new to the board. They do not know about it, nor do they know that certain topics have been discussed many times before. If it bugs you that much, send a link to something like that following:

http://www.s2000online.com/forums/search.p...daily=&pagenum=

Keep in mind, not everyone knows how to utilize the search capabilities of even search engines out there efficiently to drill down what they need.

Also, lets say that someone did search for something that had been covered many times over and what if they found something in the search that was more mis-information rather than good information? It can happen, and that's why we're all here to help each other out.

/my two cents

The FAQ section is very helpful for newbies, too.

believe me, i try...
grin

but seriously, i have to admit that i've given up trying to encourage using Search. i mean, when i post partial search returns along with a gentle reminder to use Search and the same person posts another (similar) thread a couple hours later it pretty much makes you despair for the human race.

people are:
a - too damn lazy,
b - too damn stupid,
c - in love with their own voice, or
d - trying to get some "status" by upping their post count.

of course... a better Search function would help.

I think a lot of people are here for the interaction, not primarily to search for dry facts. It's fun to start a thread and wait for responses. To see the list as an FAQ or repository of previous answers would make it really boring. I try to just skip the threads i've seen three times already...

I use it all the time myself, But my feeling is that the new guys just want to be a part of the community. I can't imagine it is much fun to just use this strictly as a source for answers with out a little "Hey how's it going?" along with it.
