Also present were Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, the two who say they discovered the Bigfoot corpse while hiking in the woods of northern Georgia. They also are co-owners of a company that offers Bigfoot merchandise.

If you read their entire story, they basically are saying they "found it" but won't say they found it dead. They stress they are worried about releasing any more info on the events, because it might be considered endangered and thus put them in hot water if they killed it. So no, they don't really claim they found it dead.
As for why... it's pretty simple. This thing has supposedly been seen for hundreds of years, yet nobody has proved it. If you can get ONE body to prove it's out there, you can gain government protection for the entire species. If there is one, there must be a population of hundreds or thousands. Most new species aren't discovered until someone kills one and brings a body back.
