why work long hours

why do they think that the work is so important at the time?
It's all about paying your "Dues".
If you want something you have to work for it as long as the "End justifies the means."
Also you have to factor in "working hard" and "working smart".
Some people just don't have it. They have to work harder and longer to keep up with the next guy.
Right now, I'm at sea in the middle of the Ocean working 19-20 hours a day with the Navy. Yeah...it sucks. But I've already got 20 years in and a lot of money saved.
You have to "Pay the cost, to be the Boss".

for those who say they want to provide for their families, what do you think of the idea that a poor family can be incredibly happy if they just have good relationships with each other?
I think it's completely true that a close knit family can be happy without a lot of money. The old cliche, Money can't buy happiness is very true in my opinion. It's always cool to have nice cars and whatever, but I'm not more "happy" since I've gotten my s2k. Maybe a bit more fulfilled? Like a sense of accomplishment, but not necessarily happy.
funny u mentioned the lambo and top gear. did u see the pic they showed in this week's show of the guy who was inspired by their road trip? his poor lambo somehow ended up in a ditch completely destroyed.
forget the exotics, i'd love just to have the means to drive my s2k around the world.

There are a lot of reasons why people are poor and many of them are self induced. Some of that percentage has families and some do not.
The other point is that some people simply have different priorities. If work is higher then family, wife or dog, then bring on the overtime.
If family, wife or dog is higher priority then work, then most likely the bread winner will pick a job that allows him to do so and not have to make those decisions of one or the other.

ahahaha no i didn't. I'm downloading the rest of Season 10 right now, hopefully it'll be done by the time I'm off work in an hour.
oh man did that episode turn me on. I'm immediately started looking for new routes around British Columbia to tour in the S since I got vacation days coming up.
Oh an even more unrelated note, I'm glad I found someone posting something interesting at this hour. Made my shift go by so much faster.

^^^^ Well said!
I'm in a similar situation. I AM my department, so it would be immediately obvious if I weren't getting my work done, and it would also be glaringly obvious (and expensive) if I made a mistake.
I work 40 hours a week, because that's what they pay me to work. I spend time with my family, time at the gym, and can read a few books every week.
A friend of mine who happens to be a manager here works a lot of hours. He typically works from 8:30am to 8 or 9pm 5 days a week, and usually another 8-10 hours over the weekend. He's on so many medications for various stress-induced ailments that his desk drawer looks like a pharmacy.
No thanks, I really don't need the extra money. He makes less per hour than I do, that's for sure.
As to doing the job, I know by now that if I can't do it in the allotted 40 hours, it's too much. That hasn't happened yet, but I feel no obligation to sacrifice my unpaid time off in the event that it does.

I am no longer limited in what I can do because of the cost, but rather the time. Until I build up my investements more I am essentially a wage earner and if I'm not working I'm not earning. I balance my work with my family. When I'm not working I'm with my family and vice versa. Some people think I'm a little strange because I don't go out with the guys or do a lot of hobby type stuff, but I don't care. Nothing is more important than my kids. I work to save money so that they can do whatever in life they choose, so my wife doesn't have to work and can be with them as much as necessary, and I too admit I'm materialistic and I want some things. I am willing to save some extra money to buy a dream car. It's my singular dream and I believe I'll be able to achieve it soon. IT was a PAINFUL path, but the payout is nice.
