Default Window XP file association hell

Sorry for the rash of tech questions latey, it's been a bad week for me vs. the computer.

I was just trying to download a few software upgrades, all ".exe" files. Wierd thing is that the system has associated ".exe" as a .jpeg (with a Photoshop icon as the host application) but actually opens with Adobe Acrobat.

How do I remove a file association? I don't want to change apps (which is the only option I can find). I just want the .exe file to open on it's own.

go to tools, then folder options, then file types. find whatever the extension is that you need to open. and then change it to open with that program.

I found that, but the problem is that the .exe file is an installer (that's not installed on my system. So, I just want to remove the current association and not replace it with another.

What am I missing?

Choose delete instead of change. Double check the real file name. If it has two extensions, like xxxx.jpg.exe which means it may be a virus using the jpg extension to make it look like a picture. You can also right click and choose the "open with" option for special cases.
