Default Windows XP problem

I'm running wireless 802.11g network in the house going through a DSL router. my own computer runs fine, but the wife's computer for some reason isn't picking up the DHCP assignment! the router says it's given the NIC an IP, but windows XP insists that it's running 169.254.199.36

now i can force the ip address, DNS, etc. but for some reason that doesn't work either

what the hell's going on?

are you doing MAC address filtering on the wireless router? what about WEP?

I'd double-check these first.

i'm running MAC address filtering, but the NIC is listed, AND the router shows that it gave the computer an IP.

this might seem silly, but are you sure that XP is set to acquire an IP?

if so, you might try the following in a DOS prompt:
ipconfig to show your current IP
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig again, to see if the IP received was correct

call the tech support from where u bought ur wirless network card.

i had a similar problem i couldnt troublshoot myself, than i called linksys tech support (they are hard to understand because they are all fobs, but u might get lucky and get help from someone with decent english.) and they were able to fix my problem. i forgot how but they had me go through various steps and knew exactly what was blocking my signal..

If you statically assign the IP address can you ping the router? If so does it take a long time to receive the packets?

Is it a new wireless card, has it worked in the past?
