Default wiretapping

what do you know about wiretapping? how is it done? where can it be done? and how to detect it?

this is not for me directly and any ideas you have should not involve in any preventative measured or detection measures by the phone company themselves.

also, if the phone company is involved, who do you go to and how do you seek out federal charges against a person for doing such?

this is serious and the scenario above is what I am working with.

Are you certain that you're not just a wee bit paranoid?

Go to radio shack....they have a device that will tell you if your phone line is tapped. Your line can be tapped anywhere from inside your residence, to the local exchange. If you get your lec involved, they can tell if the line is tapped & do something about it....including getting the authorities involved.

Even paranoid people have enemies.

If you truly believe that your civil liberties are being violated then you have many options!

Always start at the top. Call your state's Attorney General's office first. If you have sufficient evidence to support this claim, an investigation will take place.

Good luck.

so the STATE is involved? I guess if local or state folks are involved and there is no legitimate reason, I hope federal authorities will get back with you asap. Sorry to hear that this is happening at all to anyone. I hope it gets resolved soon.

The radio shack thing will only work on certain taps... most taps will be undetectable with that device (they are checking for line load). Most tap devices will isolate themselves from the line. Another method is to tap the phone directly (you will need to get inside to get access to the phone to be tapped) and is harder to trace. A common device to use to detect taps is to use a frequency spectrum analyzer (if the bug is transmitting). This device pin points radio frequencies and strengths that are not supposed to be there. There are so many techniques to tap phones now adays, that with each new technology, it makes it harder and harder to pinpoint the taps.
