hehe, percocet...yer all lightweights.

I have neuropathy in my legs (nerve damage) and percocet was ineffective. I was on fentanyl (the patch...it is VERY VERY strong) supplemented with oxycodone. I now take methodone, about 40mg a day. Percocet is like asprin to me now; I could take 50mg with no effect

I too have wisdom teeth, but due to the fact I'm on dialysis I have to delay the removal.
BTW, taking 50mg of percocet and kiss your liver good bye

I had my wisdom teeth out, and they were so impacted they were pushing my other teeth together. Then they had complications with the top right one because it was about 2 times larger than a normal tooth, so they had to cut a bigger slit.

My only advice to you:

Take your painkillers SPECIFICALLY as directed, and if you aren't in any pain anymore, get rid of them. Do not... DO NOT recreationally take them.

I just got out of rehab for painkiller addiction... withdrawls suck BAD. Not to mention my liver is pretty damaged, I can't tolerate food, My memory is shot (which I have to get one of them brain scans to make sure there isn't any damage) and nothing OTC works for headaches... I get to suffer until all the toxins leave my body, which can take up to 6 months from the volume i was taking them.

Wow, good luck with getting over your addiction Evilkittie. I understand that it is very, very easy to fall into addiction to pain killers when using them for pain management. It happens to people with the strongest conviction and willpower in the world (Brett Favre), so it's not anything to be ashamed of. My best friend went through something very similar after a car accident. She was in a chemically induced coma for over a month, then had to be heavily medicated for a long, long time afterwards. She ended up becoming dependent upon her pain killers too.

Anyway, I am being very careful with how they are taken. I have a schedule set up and will not allow myself to take more than what is suggested (4-6 hours). I plan to switch over to Ibuprofen as soon as feasible. After a major, major shoulder surgery, I only took one or two of my percosets, then just started taking 400 mg of Advil as pain management. I don't like narcotic pain killers, mainly because I'm a control freak and hate the feelilng of being "out of it" when under the influence.

Again, I wish you a quick recovery. Hey, I'll be sitting on the couch in front of my computer for the next day or two, so if you need someone to talk with (about whatever), I'll be here. You can always PM me.

Oh yeah, I also just found out that oxycodone is the same as percoset, just a different name (from the same friend who was addicted to percoset and oxycotton). Glad I'm not on something more potent than what I'd originally thought!

Thanks again to everyone with advice and well wishes! This really is the best online community ever!

Ouch, that sounds terrible. So far I've only eaten chocolate pudding and protein shakes. I'm taking all kinds of notes today. . . no Lays, rinse a lot. Thanks!

Rinsing with salt water - when did you guys start rinsing with salt water? I think the doctor said to start tomorrow, but I just re-read my post-op instructions, and they say to start today. Unfortunately, I was a little loopy when she gave me directions verbally, then still loopy when I first read the post-op instructions. . . now I'm confused. I don't want to risk an infection!

You could start after 24 hours. The more often you rinse, the faster you will heal. Most important is to rinse with the salt water(warm water so it won't burn) after you eat.

I only used what they prescribed after the surgury. I figured that it would hurt the most after the operation and I would need the strong stuff. After that I just used tylenol. I don't like to take pain meds either.

Oh, i stop bleeding about 6-7 hours after the surgury.

Make sure you change out the gauze every half hour. Bite on it firmly and will help stop the bleeding faster. If you run out of gauze. You could safely use a tea bag(yes a tea bag). Put a little water to wet the bag and use it.

DON"T USE A STRAW!!!!! No sucking on tits or anything! If you do you will subject yourself to a universe of pain!!!!!!
What happens is: When they take out the tooth, there is a layer of blood that soon covers over the nerves where the tooth was. If you suck too much, it may raise that portion and leave your nerves open. It's called a dry socket. I was told that if that happens. Nothing they could prescribe will help stop the pain.
OK, thanks, I'll start rinsing tomorrow. I'm still bleeding after 10 hours, so I think I'll try the teabags next. Hahaha, if having gauze sticking out of my mouth wasn't already ridiculous enough!

Finally. . . there will be no "sucking" of any kind going on. My special lady friend is in Machu Picchu right now. I won't see her until the end of Sept., in St. John, so I should be healed by then! Side note: it must be nice to travel around latin america and the caribbean while contemplating one's future! Man, I found a keeper (if she ever comes back).

words of wisdom.

the VERY FIRST drug I EVER abused was Demerol, which was given to me after my wisdom teeth were removed (bottom 2 were impacted, pushing my teeth forward. Demerol is an opiate, taken orally.)

at the time, I used to get really horrible migrane headaches so I thought to myself, "If I just tolerate a little bit of this jaw pain..." (which, bad as it is, is not nearly as bad as a full-blown migrane) "... I can use this Demerol for the next migrane I have."

well I did, and the next migrane I took some. I was stoned and wrote something in my personal journal along the lines of, "If this is what it's like to get high, HELLOOOOOO MARIJUANA." which was a gateway to many wasted years and dollars of drug experimentation.

fortunately (VERY FORTUNATELY), I have since left it all behind and don't miss any of it one bit. I am one of the fortunate ones, because I've seen more than a few highly gifted and motivated friends who also began experimenting around the time I did, and they squandered away all their excellent potential to live rich, full lives. I'm sure many are still caught in the grip of drug abuse.

Certainly there are many who are able to keep it under control. And a good number (such as myself), who are able to free ourselves from it before we were too badly damaged. But a sad number of lives are lost to it.

And to think, it all started with me innocently deciding to save some of my wisdom teeth pain medicine for my next migrane headache...
