Rich, I can't see an issue with it. My ex and I didn't like the same movies, so sometimes, he and I would go separately with friends to see movies. Heck, I even did this when I wanted to go to a concert and he didn't!

Unless the wife voices some objection, just go and enjoy the movie! You deserve it!

Mingster,
In my own experience, going to the movies without my wife is only acceptable when taking my kids to see a childrens movie. so tread carefully, regardless of what your wife may say....

Why don't you ask her to go with you anyway whether its her type of movie or not. As a couple I would think she would go to the movie just to be with you.

Also if you ask and she declines, she has no argument against you going by yourself.

why not alternate movie nights? You know, "honey I would like you to come with me to see lord of the rings, then when supper sappy tear jerker movie comes out, I'd love to take you."

I wonder whether she knows much about The Lord of the Rings, or if she is making an uninformed assumption about it. I think this movie can be enjoyed by people who do not like traditional action/adventure/fantasy films.
