I quit a decent, relatively fun job to work at a small CPA firm (to get license and knowledge).... They lead me to believe they were "big picture" consultant types...

then.... they are actually lame-ass bookkeepers mostly and now have me reconciling cash, payroll tax returns, etc..

PLUS - i worked lots of Overtime hours for tax season with no additional pay and got. NO FREAKIN $$$$. They half heartedy did say "thank you". ( i asked if i could write off all that time as a charitable donation...they didn't get it)

I have obviously been surfing more now that I have found out more of what I am in store for... needum change jobs quickly!

Just a heads up, unless you are a contractor (and sometimes, even if you are) lots of job turnover during a short period of time looks bad to potential employers and creditors. It might be more advisable to stick it out for at least a year and work from within the company to change your situation.

Yea, be pissed but move on. I would chalk it up to experience. Life's too short to let this get the best of you. There are plenty of CPA firms that do the type of work you described, you just need to either find a niche firm (small firm that works on one specific type of client) or a regional firm with a much larger client base.

BTW, it is a beautiful day in SC - hit about 75 and not a cloud in the sky. (left my firm early today to take a spin!)

My wife's a CPA and she worked for not one but two Big 6 (or 4 or 2 or whatever the current number is now) accounting firms (what used to be Deloitte & Touche and what used to be KPMG).

They work you like dogs. "Busy Season" is essentially from the first workday after New Year until the end of April. Mandatory 65 hour weeks, Saturdays, Sundays, whatever it takes to have the maximum amount of billable time. The hours were so crazy, that when we were living in Pasadena, she used to work at a client in Fontana (45 miles one way) and she would come home after I was already asleep in bed and then get up, shower and leave before I got up!

But you gotta do this for at two years to get your CPA!

Scot

Welcome to the world of Public Accounting. I did my three years there and got the hell out. It doesn't get better until you get to partner - so I advise you jump ship and get into big corp. America.
