Hong Kong's Kai Tek International Airport. Closed for a reason? You decide.

After reading about the closing of Hong-Kong's international airport (Kai Tak) I did a little more digging into the subject, and found that the highly successful international airport was closed, for a DAMN good reason. The approach had you descending down a mountainside, and, any pilot flying on the leeward side of a mountain knows about mountain turbulence. Wellll.. here are a few pictures demonstrating just how close that airport came to having some pretty serious disasters.

*this site has popups, so have google bar or another popup blocker loaded if you are using MS Internet Exploder/Nutscrape.

Malaysian airlines "Johor Bahru" 747-4H6/overwater nearly eats it on landing.
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=11251 <- Short final, any good pilot would have aborted.
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=11252 <- The retard STILL goes for the runway
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=11253 <- Pays for his mistake, nearly wrecking the BRAND new Boeing

More shenanigans at Kai-Tek:
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=32673 <- KAL B747/Cargo buzzing a few high rises and a BIG hill
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=48980 <- NCA B747/Cargo eats it on landing
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=48640 <- ANOTHER passenger 747 eats the runway. (pay special notice to the Lockheed Tristar in the background, I would be crapping my pants if I was the pilot of that jet.)
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=45644 <- Where is the runway again?
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=163544 <- A B747 getting fished out of the drink.
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=163466 <- that same 7'4 a few days earlier in Kowloon bay
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=21662 <- Threading the needle
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=10683 <- A russian Aeroflot pissing fuel all over the runway.

Now.. back to the Carribean... some would argue that the most beautiful approaches to any airport are over the crystal blue waters of the carribean ocean. I'd have to agree. On the island of St Maartens, they built the airport right at one end of the island, with the end of the runway (seriously) 25ft from the beach. Now some of these jets look like they are going to crash.. but.. thats a NORMAL approach, as the 747 needs every inch of available runway space to get stopped.
These are NOT photoshops.

http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=203135 <- land a 747 on THAT? NO problem!
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=147563 <- Corsair 7'4, registration number "F-GSEX". haha
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=1075 <- no way. that fence is the AIRPORT.
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=219074 <- the AA jet doesn't need as much room as a 747 to land
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=216679 <- I feel REALLY bad for the people on the beach when the pilot goes WFO for takeoff.
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=203134 <- whats with that paint scheme?
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=203132 <- picture perfect landing
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=203129 <- Delta, we loves us some flyin, and it be showin' like a motherfu*ka.
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=203128 <- KLM about .5 sec before wheels down
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=15 <- Speechless. The full size version of this is my desktop.

In december we went on a cruise and it went to St. Maarten. The main thing we wanted to do there was go to that beach. it was truly awesome!!!! (but horrible traffic on that island)
