Hong Kong's Kai Tek International Airport. Closed for a reason? You decide.
After reading about the closing of Hong-Kong's international airport (Kai Tak) I did a little more digging into the subject, and found that the highly successful international airport was closed, for a DAMN good reason. The approach had you descending down a mountainside, and, any pilot flying on the leeward side of a mountain knows about mountain turbulence. Wellll.. here are a few pictures demonstrating just how close that airport came to having some pretty serious disasters.

Malaysian airlines "Johor Bahru" 747-4H6/overwater nearly eats it on landing.

Now.. back to the Carribean... some would argue that the most beautiful approaches to any airport are over the crystal blue waters of the carribean ocean. I'd have to agree. On the island of St Maartens, they built the airport right at one end of the island, with the end of the runway (seriously) 25ft from the beach. Now some of these jets look like they are going to crash.. but.. thats a NORMAL approach, as the 747 needs every inch of available runway space to get stopped.
These are NOT photoshops.
