But then we're talking about colour, arse, conservatoire, draughts, pernickety, etc.

I don't think that most people in the U.S. who use "spelt" are referring to the British roots of that usage....

You may be right.

However, inasmuch as starchland is Canadian (note the flag under his avatar), what "most people in the U.S." would write isn't particularly relevant, is it?
