Default Yahoo! Mail - **Get an Account Quickly**

Yahoo mail increased their storage 50x today for their free accounts as well as coding a streamlined, fresh interface with lots of keyboard shortcuts and timesavers. Now all free accounts have 100 mb of storage. The interface is much cleaner and you can either turn off colors and graphics on the compose screen or turn on full S2Ki-like smilies. Pretty darn slick.

Yes, it's obviously to try to head off gmail, but hey, the customer now wins twice. I'm sure Hotmail will be next in line. Their servers have really been sucking lately. Maybe a shot of Google-cloning would do them some good.

looks like there is a massive distributed-denial-of-service attack going on today that is affecting some major sites on the web; Yahoo, Google, Microsoft...

Apparently I was one of the lucky ones getting 6MB free from Yahoo. 100MB will be nice, very nice.

Not to sound pissy, but what good does all that storage do if it means I just have a bigger mailbox from which to clear spam. I wish they could do something to improve their filters.

Before you jump on me for complaining about the free service I am getting, remember that as a Yahoo user I am constantly being bombarded by their advertising. In my opinion, this is a symbiotic relationship. As I'm sure you are aware, Yahoo and its advertisers put a value on my attention. At this point it is 100 MB of spam storage.

Attack was directed at Akamai, which of course filters down to those sites.

Spam ... I get a lot less in my yahoo acct than others (hotmail, netscape, etc.) Everything that I do get goes into my Bulk folder anyway, so it hardly bothers me.

Not only do you get 100Mb, you can now send emails up to 10Mb, instead of 3Mb.

It's funny that Yahoo releases this upgrade on the day that I finally got a gmail account. Even though 100 MB is more than enough, 1000 MB > 100 MB. Why would anyone continue to use hotmail?

Attack Blocks Access to Popular Web Sites

A widespread electronic attack on a company that handles traffic for some of the world's most-visited Web sites knocked several high-profile sites offline for at least 45 minutes early Tuesday.

The attack targeted Internet servers run by Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai Technologies, which distributes and manages Web data for companies such as Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news), Federal Express and Xerox Corp. It also handles traffic for the FBI (news - web sites) and washingtonpost.com.
