Local authorities are negotiating a possible settlement with Wilbanks' attorneys over the cost of the search for her. The mayor said officials are asking for $43,000. Wilbanks' attorneys "have countered back with $13,000 plus, which actually covers the overtime hours and out-of-pocket expense for food and clothing -- or food and gas and things like that," Lasseter said.
Can't believe this, I'd give them zip~!

This is the stupidest thing ever. One the search went on without her lying about anything, so that money isn't her responsibility. The only thing she did was waste a few hours from the time she called the police saying she was kidnappeduntil they found out the truth. The four hours or so is all she's responsible for. She had no responsibilty to tell anyone she descided to leave the state or the country or blast off to mars even. We all have the right to get in our cars, not tell anyone and leave. This money for the search effort is in no shape or form her fault. If she called the police and said " I'm in vegas, I just had cold feet" they would still have wasted the money in searching for her but this conversation wouldn't be taking place because she has a 100% right to have done that. The only problem was the kidnapping story, which the police probably knew was a lie about 15 minutes into it. So finacially this is rediculous.

However she did make a false police report fo that she could be prosecuted and whatever happedns is her fault.

what.. like bring an national alert for the look out of her is okay??????

pleeze. people like this should be punished.

she wasted society's resources and time and as well for good civilian watching/search for her..
From what I can tell, the "national alert" happened long before she was found and made any sort of police report.

If I up and move to California without telling anybody and my parents/friends/employer launch a nation-wide search, should I be liable for the costs of such? Of course not.

Saying what she did after she was found, however - definitely a no-no.

I had read a news story that said she has had 11 bridal showers and that for the wedding she has 14 bridesmaids.

When the police in Vegas cuaght her the quote from the spokesman said

"She is a little too self absorbed right now to understand what she has done."

When have you ever heard the police make a statement like that about someone? She sounds like a real prize. Real prize nutjob that is. I hope the couple are very happy together.

Did somebody say VEGAS? Vegas this weekend baby!!!!!!! Gonna make my annual stupid bet of $20 on the Vikings to win the Super Bowl. Its a sickness.

You might be right, I could care less really. But she was missing for a few days, she cut her hair (as if she was hiding) and them makes up the story about the assualt and kidnapping. Something does not seem right to me.

Besides, if you walk out on someone, leave your stuff and disappear without contacting anybody you have to know somebody is going to be looking for you. I mean, be an adult for god's sake. It is not too difficult to scribble a note that says

"I need some time. I will get in touch. Love, Goofy"

I think she is a selfimportant nut who wanted some national attention for whatever reason people with a screw loose need attention. If she looks like a national moron (like that colleg student in Madison who faked her disappearance and hid in the woods for a couple days, Audry Seeler) and has to pay a few thousand bucks for being a reject, thats fine with me too. She's going to get more than enough money to pay the costs after she gives an interview to a news magazine show. That just means she makes a bunch of money for bieng a fraud and the tax payers of that county are left holding the bag.

I agree that what she did was rude and incosiderate and not very mature but it's not a crime well until you lie about being kidnapped.

I agree vader, what she did was screwed up and morally wrong, but not illegal until she lied to the police in Nevada or wherever she was found.

this has to be the dumbest national news story in a long time. I can't believe it got as much coverage as it did. Why does anyone even care?
