Are You A Betting Man (or Woman)? Encore
Yesterday I got a voice-mail message asking me to call to arrange an audition to perform in the Close-Up Gallery at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA. For those of you who don't know, the Castle is the home of the Academy of Magical Arts and the premier magicians' club in the US; some would say in the world. I've been pursuing this audition for quite some time now, and the gentleman in charge finally phoned back.
So the question is: what do you think my chances are?

While I haven't seen you perform live, I have seen you on video...you look like a very capable magician! I would say your chances are as high as you think they are...! Your table-side manner seemed very friendly and cordial, I'm sure you will do fine!

Good luck anyway, though I suspect luck will have very little to do with this one!

I'm sure you'll do just great, but what exactly is at stake, .. club membership?... peer recognition?

It is well-known (locally, at least) that performing at the Magic Castle is an acknowledgement by an accepted authority of a magician's superior skill. In short, if I perform there my business cards, letterhead, website banner, etc. will be changed from "Magic Castle Member" to "Magic Castle Performer."
What exactly is at stake? More bookings and increased fees. Yes, you guessed it: it is completely self-serving and mercinary.
Thanks for all the good wishes.
This afternoon I should find out the date of the audition, which I will post here. After the audition, I'll post the results, good or bad. (I believe they rarely ask one to audition to perform unless there is a good expectation of passing; the judges don't want their time wasted.) Should I pass, I will post the dates I will be performing (three shows a night for a week straight), and encourage everyone in town that week to stop in.
Bill-
Good luck with your audition. I'm sure you'll pass with flying colors. like I said before, My wife and I want to go to the Magic Castle soon and see you perform. Also, we should also do a Pho lunch again.

Because the new board will be coming into power on February 17, I was told that, allowing them some time to acclimate, March 1 would be a good date.
So, I am tentatively scheduled to do one of the lunch shows on Friday, March 1. The first show is at noon, and that's the one I'm most likely to do, but it could be as late as 1:30. I'll know better as the date gets nearer.
Now all I have to do is wait.
And maybe practice a little.
