They're back...

 

I'll consider the S2000 mainstream when you can see them around L.A. with 12" rims with undersized tires stretched over them sticking 4" or more out from underneath the fenders with the cute mudflaps at a 45 degree angle to keep the cops off their back.

Let's not forget replacing the steering wheel with an undersized version made from chromed chain, and replacing the gas pedal with a large chrome "bare foot".

I've seen some 300ZX's suffer this fate, along with more deserving cars like the Suzuki Samurai.
