i was given 2 questions recently to solve. I solved one in like 5 minutes and other one took a day.

1) Tim's tie rack has 35 blue ties, 13 blue, 11 yellow, 9 orange, and 2 red, not sorted in any order. The light bulb burned out and Tim could not see what color the ties are. How many ties does Tim have to take to be sure he has at least 2 ties of the same color?

2) Tim spent all his money in 5 stores. In each store, he spent $1 more than half of what he had when he came in. How much did Tim have when he entered the first store?

Let me know how much time you spent on each.

I must be real smart. First one took about 5 seconds [red]Well, 6 actually[/red]

And the second one just over a minute (62 seconds)

Ohh, in that case I need to spend another second working it out.

 

1) After reading the question, it took me less than 5 seconds to respond with an answer.
2) Busted out some scratch paper and a pen, solved in less than 2 minutes.

 

1) 2 seconds
2) 1 minute while arguing with gf

 

#1 was just a no brainer. I knew the answer after reading the 1st sentence.
#2 about a minute of some mental calculations
