You're fired!
I heard something on the Today show a few days ago about how many people (perhaps 75%) have been fired, at one time or another, from a job.
Has this ever happened to you?

This happened to me a number of years ago. Another area of the company had an opening but, it required me to take a 50% cut in pay. I decided to stay as I wanted to prove that the person who let me go (he was fired 2 months later) was a jerk and that I brought a great deal of value to the company. As a result when I left the company, 3 years later, I left as a Director and making more money than when I was let go.
Yeah, part of a big post 9/11 layoff three years ago.
The best thing was getting a new job at a much smaller company, witha nice group of co-workers.
The worst part was the 30% paycut that came with the new job
But at least it got me moving on developing a second income.

Laid off
after tech bubble burst. I was able to find a job the same week that I left that job, but the pay is lower and it is BOOORRING. I have worked at this place for a year and have put about 100-150 resumes (to jobs I could do in my sleep) and I have received about ~5-7 call backs.

Twice, both times in retail outlets (in the mid 70's) where the owner or manager didn't like me on a personal level and both times I was not unhappy at the result. Ironically, one store was out of business within a year and the other has been in Chapter 11 several times.

Do you guys consider being "fired" and "laid off" to be the same thing? I associate the term fired with getting kicked out the door so to speak whereas laying someone off is more due to not having a position for them anymore. I'd say that these two are pretty different even though they yield a similar result, exception being you wouldn't reference a company that fired you for incompetence
yea, i also associate being fired as forced out because they don't like you whereas a layoff is just an economic fact.
I've been fired before from a resident advisor job because my friend borrowed some old computer equipment (OLD at the time and unused in a storage closet) to keep his PC running for the summer. He did intend on returning it. They fired him and me because I knew about it and didn't blow the whistle on him.
I was let go 2 months after 9/11 from a financial analyst job. I found another, much better, job within a month and I'm still with that company.

When I was 15, I got a job bagging groceries for Publix, a local supermarket chain, for the summer. On my 2nd day, the manager tells me to clean the bathrooms. I refused since I'm not the friggin janitor so he fired me. Technically I quit before he fired me though.
Since then, no. Now I do all the firing, which sucks, especially if the employee starts crying.
