Default First hand experience with soft top replacement?

My top is getting pretty bad. I could probably limp it through the summer again with some more tape & such, but its looking worse and worse. I tried to take it through a touchless car wash last year. Big.Wet.Mistake.

Besides, an EZ-ON vinyl top can be had for around $400 bucks, which really isn't bad.

I have sent out a few quotes request to places that would put the top in for me, but I figured I would ask here also to see if anyone local has tackled replacing their own tops. I'm a big fan of the cost savings and education that come with DIY projects, but this needs to fit, be water tight, and requires the removal of lots of plastic that I'm prone to breaking.

So - any Ohio folk tried this?

I can add my Miata experience >>> It's a total PITA, and that was non-powered.
I estimate I spent 10-12 hours replacing it, with more time on the removal. One of the issues was a rusted screw in a very hard to reach spot that ultimately got drilled out ...

I bought a major aftermarket brand top, and the holes were still not perfect. I got it to work in the end, and it came out nice.

Bottom line >>> IF someone will do it for a couple hundred bucks ... Have them do it unless you REALLY want to say you've done it.

I did a miata top as well, an NA. It was horrible.

I would hope a S2K top would at least be a little easier..

I've never done it... but in other posts I have seen that it is a 8-10 hour job!

Unless you are really handy with tools, and have lots of patience.... might want to spend the $$ and have it done!

My friend did this conversion with a CR recently.. well, they put in a new rail and top.

Mchester has done this conversion as well..he might be able to give you some more insight on this as well.

Thank you all for the input.

Sounds like unless I can get this done affordably, I'd be better off continuing to glue and tape it for the season.

Why do you even need a top?

Top = Down always...

There should be an astericks for "top always down".

I agree. Top always down when driving. But when parked, I put the top up. I know it doesn't offer much protection, but its better than nothing. Ill put it up to keep the interior cool when at Autocross when I'm not in the car.

Its true though, I really don't need a new top yet. Its just ugly. And a little leaky when I do have to park in the rain.
