My Weekend at the Dragon
I went with Quattro Club and OVW to the Dragon this weekend. First and foremost, the weather was a perfect 75-80 and sunny--which alone was a relief from the crap sitting over Ohio for the past week.
All of the talk about a step up in law enforcement proved to be true. We left early Saturday and were able to run the Dragon pretty hard until 11:45 when two TN State Troopers arrived and parked at the overlook with their radar guns. We left for Robbinsville and found a cool pizza place for lunch and drove over the skyway and few other cool roads in the area.
We returned to the Dragon at 4:30 and were passed by 4 cruisers and and 4 motorcycle cops on 129 passing the lake on the north side. Evidently they stepped up their presence throughout the day. There wasn't much talk about tickets or citations. We ran the dragon a few more times and then drove from Deal's Gap to Fontana Dam for some photos. I have to say that NC28 is more fun than the Dragon. The road is pretty rough from frost heaves, but it is still fast. After our last run north through the Dragon we stopped at the large gravel lot and BS'd for about an hour and watched the sun set behind the mountains. As we were leaving someone heard a siren and sure enough an ambulance was racing south along the lake and down to the dragon. We also passed another TN trooper on the parkway, his lights flashing. I was going 85+ mph with four cars following me when we passed. He briefly slowed but never followed us so I assume he was following the ambulance.
We found out on Sunday morning a rider had gone off the road and down the cliff. There isn't anything about his condition on tailofthedraon.com but I hope he is ok. Maybe a bit ironic that it happened after the law left.
The new S4 (bone stock) was ok on the Dragon. The low end torque was awesome for pulling out of the corners. At over 3800 pounds though, it is far from nimble. My old S4 with coilovers and swaybars handled a little better. If it had the low end torque of the V8 it would be the better car for the Dragon.
The weather was soooo nice I wished I had the S2000 for the weekend. Next time I suppose.
