Default A test before getting a Colonoscopy?

Anyone who has had one can only appreciate an alternative to the colonoscopy. I sat through a lengthy seminar on this last week and I was shocked by the total number of deaths per year (57,000) and the number of people who will follow their doctor's instructions and have a colonoscopy performed (1 in 6 patients). Just thought I would share. Please don't hack this thing up. ( Steve)

For those like me, who have a family history of colon cancer, this stuff can't be ignored.

I never heard of this till Ray mentioned it.

It's good to see that there are products out there providing an alternative to the colonoscopy, given those staggering figures!

Thanks for the info Ray!

Not that i'm promoting proctology or colonoscopy but here is a snipet from labcorp who is promoting this

While PreGen-Plus may be used adjunctively or in non-compliant patients, PreGen-Plus is not intended for use as a primary screening method

There is no better way to screen than direct visualization. Complications can be minimized if you have a technically skilled doc. Just because your primary refers you to someone, doesn't mean they are the best. PM me if you want some names of good gi guys in town. They have small hands and moisturize frequently.

I agree. Labcorp does not push this as an alternative to a colonoscopy, but a pre screen that is less evasive. In Gary's case, I think this would be a good way to start with a young patient with a family history. I am not in sales or the lab, I am in charge of patient services, so I do not know as much about the product. I just know how to instruct the patient to collect and how to prepare it for the lab.
The siminar was intersting. It seems getting a patient to get a colonoscopy performed is a crap shoot.
