Test Pipe first impressions
Sooo, got the TP from Sabo (much thanx to the late night drop!) Anyways, got it somehow installed at Marysville on mod day at a pretty steep price I thought...anyways. I got it on now....stink an all.
Performance. Maybe its my butt dyno, but the car seems to open up at the higher RPMs now. In VTEC range, it just seems to want to rev more freely. Now I don't know if this translates to any substantial power gains, but if its tricking my brain into justifying the stink and the 200 beans experiement, then its fine.
Now the only concern or issue rather I have is that I get a pretty distinct whistling at high RPMs. I'm wondering if that spark plug antifouler is doing that. The hole as I recall, was pretty close to what I could see a whistling diameter would be. I'm afraid to bore that out larger, due to the O2 sensor defeat works by letting less exhaust gasses in. But that whistling is kinda annoying.
The sound is kinda what I had in mind. I had to actually put my intake cover back on to hear it!
It sounds similar I'd say to a tone that a 350z makes, only quieter than that. I'll feel this little experiement out for a few months and see if I want to go back to being environmentally friendly.

$200 to install a test pipe?
100 for the install. at 66 bux an hour for the labor....took 1.5 hours? I thought they would do it in 30 min. I also thought that the top striker latch was as TSB and free. I asked whether it was free or not, no answer. Too busy I guess. There was a lot going on. I'm not totally dissatisfied. Just maybe I should have asked before getting into it.

stupid question but buy fouling the o2 sensor and making it think it's clean air all the time can't that cause the car to run lean?

If you do a search on it, the primary O2 sensor takes the readings for the engine management, and the secondary (the one at the cat) is only to tell the ecu that the cat is still working.

Well its not as simple as removing the cat and fooling the O2 sensor. Yes the primary O2 does the main reading for engine management but the O2 in the cat reads the cat performance which in turn adjust fuel to keep the cat at peak performance. Since the ECU is set to run as efficient as possible it will pull fuel until the cat shows a lean condition which will never happen having a simulator in there so it will run on the lean side. You will feel the gain of running the car lean but at what cost. Just my opinion from what I have seen on the dyno.
