Default AP1 Shocks vs AP2 Shocks

So I am thinking about installing some Springs on my car for the time being until my broke ass can afford some nice coilovers, the question that I have is about the OEM Shocks, I need to know if there is a difference between my stock shocks and AP2 stock shocks, the reason being is because I know where I can get a set of AP2 Stock Shocks and then install the springs onto those, but if they are not the same as what I have, then I may not be interested in doing that.

Thanks ahead for any input you have on this subject. (I need guidance)

Dan

Hey Dan, I don't know if that kind of research has been done on the OE shocks.

But, if Honda tuned the shocks to the spring rates, I would be careful with your choice.

As the S2K got older (read: newer), Honda tamed the handling characteristics of the car, and one of the major ways they did so was changing the spring rates. The newer the S2Ks get the stiffer the springs came in the front and the softer the springs came in the rear. I think using the fronts would just fine, and maybe better, but you'll run the risk of having a little bounce on the back end using a newer shock that was tuned to a softer spring.

FYI, the stock spring rates are something like this, F/R:

2000-2001 | 219 291 |
2002-2003 | 246 309 |
2004-2005 | 262 278 |
2006-2007 | 262 269 |
2008-2009 | 280 294 |
2008-2009 CR | 384 343 |

I would be shocked if honda didn't tune the stock shocks to match the spring rate changes throughout the years. In fact, here are the part numbers of the front and rear RH shock throughout the years. As you can see it does change slightly.

2000: 51605-S2A-A05 | 52611-S2A-A04
2002: 51605-S2A-A06 | 52611-S2A-A05
2004: 51605-S2A-A08 | 52611-S2A-A06
2006: 51605-S2A-A08 | 52611-S2A-A07
2008: 51611-S2A-S11 | 52611-S2A-S11

I am almost thinking I should just keep using my stock AP1 shocks, I am really impressed with how they preform right now, I just thought it might be easier to prep. the shocks that were already off the car, I really liked how the car handled during this last BMT with the stock shocks and springs, I just wanted to drop it and improve the handling just a little bit better. I am looking at Tein S-Techs that I found for a really good price and yes they are authentic.

Thanks,
Dan

Well...if you are looking at Tein springs, you might look at the C/R shocks. They are cheap @ $160/ea for the front and $190/ea for the rear.

Hell, you can get the C/R shocks and springs for under $1K. ...and the C/R front sway bar is around $180.

All new from Honda.

CR front swaybar is closer to $80 than $180

At the same time $700 for CR shocks is a good way towards a coilover setup... You could probably do a Koni Yellow setup for a similar price.

Dan, if you can get the AP2 shocks for cheap, it wouldn't hurt. It would tide you over for a year or so until you can get coilovers. I'd rather have newer AP2 shocks than older AP1 shocks.

Wow there have been a lot of suspension questions lately...

I wish I had more time to answer this, but I gotta go to work. I will think about this and get you a good answer on the plane today.

So I got my springs installed last night and decided to use my AP1 stock shocks for the time being. I like the new look of the car as well as how much tighter the car feels.

Thanks for the feedback on this thread, with your information and a little research of my own, I truly believe I made the right decision.
