As I was passing through Winchester, KY I met these two guys that invited me to join them for some autocross. As nice as the offer was, I was focused on my next stop. Maker's Mark Distillery.
I've never seen the foil wrapped tires and what appears to be a compressor at each tire. Somebody want to educate me on this process and how much value it has.
Those are tire warmers. Sticky tires need to come up to temperatures to grip well, and an autocross course is generally 60 secondsor shorter. So between runs they keep those tire warmers on as insulation so the tires don't cool off as fast.
When it is hot outside, you'll often see autocrossers using portable water pump bottles (like weed sprayers) to cool down their tires. Competitive AutoX can be very OCD.
Nothing special about air compressors... it is a way of tuning the car's performance by adjusting air pressures.
