Default Birthday Adventure

For my birthday Elizabeth planned a beautiful kayaking trip to the islands along the San Juan Channel. But apparently she likes to torture me, because I'm getting old, and she's evil. So she planned this great kayaking trip, but in order to get there I had to spend three days traveling by bike, bus, train, and ferry. And then I had to do it all again just to get home.

Train to Seattle

Bike to hotel

Bus to bus to bus to March's Point

Bike to Deception Pass

Bike to Anacortes

Bike to the Ferry

Ferry to Friday Harbor

Bike to kayak

Kayak to Jones Island (camp)

Kayak to Friday Harbor

Bike to ferry

Ferry to Anacortes

Bike to Burlington

Cab to Everett

Train to Vancouver

And pictures to prove it.

I had a marvelous time. Thank you, Elizabeth, for a really great memory (:

The secret? I have a transportation fetish. Anything that moves people or stuff from one location to another fascinates me. And the only thing better than watching transportation take place is to be a part of it. Everything from roller skates to rocket ships. I just can't get enough of it.

You two have NO IDEA how very jealous I am. I've never been on a train, I love to bike and absolutely LOVE kayaking. And when it comes to the San Juans...I love it and miss it so very much. Elizabeth, you did a fantastic job planning this. Glad you had fun, even more glad you got home safely.

That is awesome. Very cool idea, Elizabeth!

Heck of a long way to go too. My sister got married at Roche Harbor so I drove there. It's a long way to Anacortes!! I love the islands though. Kayaking around that area must have been a blast.

The alternative just seemed mundane. Drive there? What? Who does that?

Granted it would have only been five and a half hours instead of three days, and only cost us a tank of gas and wear'n tear on the vehicle instead of a hundred bucks in pub-trans fees, and there wouldn't have been a need for two hotels and an extra night of camping instead of four more days to kayak ... but really, where's the fun in that?

This trip happened pretty much exactly like I wanted it to.
