Default Bye BYe Lugs

So I was heading with a friend to do a little running around, took a turn (not too hard either) when my car starts vibrating and making one hell of a racket.
I pull over and lo and behold, 3 of my front passenger lugnuts are gone...because the studs are gone as well. Sheared them right off. . I went and looked around in the intersection and couldnt find any hint of them whatsoever, so it must have happened a bit before I got to that turn. Scary stuff.

Glad it didnt happen on the drive...that would have been one ugly moment on the multnomah road.

So...the car got towed to Schawbs. Gonna stop in tomorrow to see if I can chew them out enough for possibly overtorquing the lugs when they swapped my summer rubber back on a few months ago and maybe get them replaced on their dime

If I cant, does anyone know how much Schawbie would charge for it? Wonder what they'll do about the lost lugnuts?

Lugs are not a job you want to trust to Schawbs. Either do it yourself if you have the tools and are capable, or take it to your Honda dealer. And its going to cost.

Considering the timeframe in which it happened, I wasnt in a position to be picky so I had Schwabs just do it. I dont have the tools or the knowhow (yet) to do it myself. It seems fine so far. I would personally trust Schwabs more than the Honda dealer here simply based on past experiences with other family members cars.

Can you give me a little more info as to WHY I shouldnt trust a Schwabs job?

Because changing lugs is not a simple job. And you should plan on replacing the wheel bearing.

As I would normally agree with you on this, down here in Central Oregon the Honda dealership is by far worse then going to LS.

Not to mention I think being a little closer to the home office helps with the work quality at LS perhaps? I've never had a problem with them except this POSSIBLE overtorque of my lugs. 3 were broken, they replaced 4 and it cost $60.

Everything I researched on the board here implied that changing the lugs seemed pretty simple...drive it out, put the new one in, and pull it in tight, and torque the nut down. Am I wrong? Didn't see anything specific about changing the wheel bearing. I was only about 5 seconds on the broken lugs. Turned a corner, it started shuddering, and I pulled over and got towed. Would the bearing be at risk regardless?

Any info is helpful, this is a new one for me so I'm going off of what info I've found on the boards/net.

Thanks!

All I can say on this is the next time you are here in town (PDX) take a trip down to Wilsonville Honda and let Paul take a look at everything. Tell him what happened and what the repair was. He would be who I would go to, no questions asked.

Damn, that is crazy. Good thing it didnt happen at high speed though. But the Schwab here does have a rep for overtightening lug nuts. It took three of us, an impact wrench, a huge breaker bar, and lots of cursing to get the wheels off my buddy's car so we could put on his autocross wheels. What should have only taken 10 minutes ended up being an hour of us taking turns trying to break the damn things loose.

My advice is that if Schwabb won't repair their error for free, I would buy the Helms manual and do this yourself. I never did it on my Honda S2000, but I do not believe it is that difficult and you'll learn some useful things in the process.
